Wado Ryu
This martial art is a form of Karate and has been based at Simonside YIC for a number of years and is a very successful club. Wado Ryu has fully qualified instructors who take you through every step helping towards gradings’ and competitions. The meet every Wednesday evening at 7.15 pm.
Divers
The sub aqua section has been based in the centre for over 30 years and has a core membership of approx 20 members. The club is registered with the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC 765) and holds meetings every Thursday evening from 7.30 pm. The club has two Ribs and also the ability to refill their own air tanks. The club has a wealth of experience and can provide accredited instructors for all BSAC awards.
Ladies Football
South Tyneside Ladies are a new club (formed in 2005) which meets on a Wednesday evening from 6 -7pm onwards. The ladies play 11-a-side, 7-a-side and 5-a-side matches against other teams both locally and nationally. With FA qualified female coaches the team train indoors throughout the winter improving skill levels and match preparation.
Duke of Edinburgh
The centre can accommodate groups wishing to improve on their expedition skills or perhaps individuals can join one of the sections within the centre to learn a new skill, complete their service or undertake the physical section of the award at Bronze, Silver or Gold levels.

Simonside is currently able to offer weekend use of the building and its facilities for the sports hall hire alone.

A combination of all of the above can be built up to a day course as a refresher to qualifying venture or to prepare for the training weekend itself.
Rock Climbing
The centre boasts 26 state of the art climbing walls with slab and overhanging sections. The walls are varied and cater for all levels of ability from novices to experienced climbers. With fully qualified staff and equipment available the climbing wall is a popular activity with a family based session on Mondays from 7.00-9.30pm and open sessions on Thursdays from 5.30-7.00 pm (U13) and 7.00-9.30 pm (14+). The climbing wall also caters for disabled users with a specialist platform and wheelchair slab where abseiling and climbing can take place for those with special needs.
Akenshaw Project
The centre has a young men’s outreach project based within the centre where users can access physical activities, social development courses or gain new skills in a range of non-vocational activities. The scheme runs on a drop-in basis.

The centre is open Mon - Fri from 10am - 9.30pm and at weekends for activities only.
