School attendance

Sam's Story:

Sam is in Year 8.  His school attendance rate is always around 90%.  Sam thinks this is pretty good.

Let's have a look at this...

90% attendance means that Sam is absent from lessons for the equivalent of half a day every week.

Sam's attendance rate means that he has missed the equivalent of four whole weeks of lessons in a school year.

If Sam continues to attend lessons only 90% of the time, over five years he will miss the equivalent of about half a school year!

Imagine how much you would miss if you didn't attend lessons for half a school year!  A 90% attendance rate really affects Sam's chances of doing well in school.  His SATS and GCSE results will probably drop by one grade across all subjects.

Next time you're thinking of missing lessons without school permission, whether you're on holiday, at a medical appointment, have fallen out with your mates or there is some other problem, remember that low attendance means a lower chance of getting into further education or employment. The decisions that you make now will affect your future.
