If you're between 8 and 16, you probably know a lot about using the internet. The web can be a great place to find things - from music by your favourite band or learning about how things work.
So, with all of the good stuff the web has, why is safe surfing so important?
Like real surfing, there are some dangerous waters on the web which you need watch out for. Unfortunately, some internet users wrongly use the web to hurt or trick other people. If you want to avoid the sharks, then it's time to wise up! Here's how:
Thinkuknow.co.uk is a new website where you can go to share information and ideas with other people in your age group. You can learn about new things like blogs, online gaming, P2P TV, file sharing and social networking sites.
If you are in immediate danger, or want urgent help, call 999 or contact your local police on 03456 043 043.
Report it
If someone is being inappropriate; saying sexual things or asking you to do things that you feel are wrong, start by saving the conversation, blocking them and then:
> Report it to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP)
The team there are in best place to help you.
You are doing the right thing. By reporting it, you may not only help yourself but also help to make other people safer as well.
There's more help on the thinkyouknow website if you think someone is being weird in a chatroom or sending you strange emails.
