Age Restricted Goods - Fireworks:

Remember, Remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot

It seems that recently people have forgotten about the 5th Novembers’ roots with Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot and have become more concerned with bigger and brighter fireworks.

As a result, the Government changed the laws covering fireworks in 2004 to stop the sales of firework to young people and to cut the number of people being hurt by fireworks. As half of all accidents involving fireworks happen to children, Trading Standards work closely with the police and fire service to ensure children aren’t able to buy fireworks illegally.

Did you know?

  • It is against the law to carry fireworks in public if you are under 18? If you are caught you could be given a Fixed Penalty Notice and made to pay £80.
  • It is illegal to throw or set fireworks off in the street?
  • It is against the law to set off fireworks after 11pm and before 7am, except on Bonfire Night, Diwali, New Year and Chinese New Year?

To help keep children safe it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy fireworks (including sparklers). Any shop caught selling fireworks illegally could face a fine of up to £5000 and even up to six months in prison!
