Knowing The Law
Overview:
Age Restricted Goods
There are certain goods on sale in shops all around the country that are considered too dangerous to be bought by young people. Goods such as Alcohol and Cigarettes can be harmful to your health and people can be badly hurt by fireworks and solvents. As a result there are laws in place to prevent young people from buying them.
South Tyneside Trading Standards work to make sure that these laws are not broken and to keep the shoppers in the Borough safe. To do this they:
Produce and distribute posters and leaflets for all shops selling age restricted products to display.
Make visits to shops, sometimes with the fire service, to remind retailers of their responsibilities and to give warnings to shops believed to be selling goods illegally.
Investigate complaints sometimes using children to make test purchases
If shops have sold goods illegally Trading Standards will take the offending retailers to court which can mean a big fine and in some case a prison sentence.
