In line with our multi agency working for children and young peoples services, staff from Cultural Services, Sports Development, Park Rangers, Youth Service, Positive Futures took part in a bike challenge to cycle from Edinburgh to South Tyneside.
We averaged on 75 miles a day and took just over 2 days to get back home. Staff who took part were Richard Barber, Mark Cummings, Tracey Moore, Jade Ridley, Allan Moore, Bev and Brian. Many thanks also to Mick Johnson for his support with mini-bus driving on the day.
We had many laughs along the way and Mark was fab with his map-reading to get us all home safely. Thank you to all colleagues who sponsored Tracey Moore who was raising money for St Marys Stroke Club in South Tyneside.
Summer/seasonal programme for children and young people in South Tyneside
Tracey Moore, Project Manager of the Young People's Parliament, recently travelled to Brathay Hall (pictured) with colleagues who are involved with the Targeted Youth Support Pathfinder Project; ie: Youth Inclusion Programme, Temple Park Leisure Centre, Detached Youth Work, Sports Development, Positive Futures, Under 13's - Play Development, Particip8, Groundwork and Akenshaw Youth Project.
The aim of the 3 day training was to work with colleagues from different departments within the council and with our partners to look at developing an integrated summer/seasonal programme for children and young people in South Tyneside.
Richard Barber from Cultural Services and Steve Southern from the Youth Service are leading on the project to ensure that young people will have a new opportunities on offer for future summer/seasonal programmes and to ensure that all departments and agencies continue to work jointly on projects for and with children and young people.

Members of South Tyneside Young People's Parliament recently pictured in the local Gazette as they were were nominated by Ann Best from Democratic Services as youth community group of the year. The parliament have been shortlisted and will be attending the awards ceremony in July 2007. Many thanks to Ann Best for her support and encouragement with the work of the parliament. Parliament members recently attended the East Shields Community Day organised by Craig Malcom and Martin from the Neighbourhood Management Team. The parliament worked with our colleagues from the Youth Service Mick McVery, Geordie Pearce, and Warren Crake from Park Avenue Detached Project and the Mobile Youth Bus to run the 'Juice Bar'. Pictured are members of the parliament running their juice bar and generally entertaining young people throughout the day. Over 300 people attended this fantastic event. We'd like to thank Mike Skinner from Sports Development who kept us smiling all day with his music and DJ'ing. The parliament will be continuing to support the work of the Neighbourhood Plans.
Mr David Miliband MP - visited the Young People's Parliament to talk about their work and present the members with certificates to acknowledge their work and progress to date on behalf of young people in South Tyneside. The parliament have developed strong working links with local councillors and MP's and we are grateful for their continued support and help.
Members of the Parliament recently travelled to Akenshaw Burn Cottages in Keilder to undertake some voluntary work - painting, decorating, landscaping, building Bat Boxes, general clear up of the cottages as part of the groups Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme. The cottages are used by youth groups across the borough. If anyone would like more information about hiring out the cottages please contact Allan Moore (Project manager) 0191 4240118.

Members of the Parliament visited the Jarrow Community Area forum to update members and visitors on the work of the Parliament.

Members of the Parliament pictured on the day they attempted to climb Snowdon in Wales for charity and as part of their team building sessions. Unfortunately the group didnt make it all the way to the summit due to bad weather but we are attempting to do this again in March 2007.

The Parliament recently facilitated workshops at the North East Regional Youth Assembly (NERYA) event held in Stockton Middlesborough. The workshops were themed around participation and every child matters.
Jarrow representatives Jay Lavery and Kieren McDonagh are continuing to highlight issues concerning young women in the borough. Jay and Keiren have recently taken part in workshops aimed at tackling issues around teenage pregnancies in South Tyneside. They are pictured here with Teenage Pregnancy Co-ordinator Sue Southern.
Members of the Parliament recently worked with Pam Vedhara and Darren McCarty from the Youth Inclusion Programme to address issues of Anti Social Behaviour. Young people took part in filming a DVD so that young people can have their say about Anti Social Behaviour.
South Tyneside Young People's Parliament now have regular weekly drop in sessions for any members of the public who would like to come and meet the members of the Young People's Parliament to talk about any issues they have in relation to young people. The drop in's are open to all members of the community. The Sessions are held every Tuesday evening at 2 Wawn Street (red door next to the Salvation Army - just off Dean Road) from 6.30pm - 7.30pm. Please pop in and meet us, have a coffee and a chat and find out what we are doing to ensure the voices of young people are being heard and listened to in South Tyneside. Members of South Tyneside Young People’s Parliament recently attended an event held at Newcastle Civic Centre. The event was held to tackle fair trade and child poverty, December 2005.

19-21 November 2005 Committee Skills Training

The Course is a recognised accredited course and enables members to understand the importance of being a committee member.

The members enjoyed the drama production by The Vision which tackled many issues facing young people today. Members of the Bangladeshi Youth Organisation prepared fantastic food on the evening – which was much appreciated.
