There is a school council in every secondary school in South Tyneside.
The school council has representatives from all year groups usually 2 per year who meet regularly to discuss school issues and take them to the school’s management team, usually the Head Teacher, Deputy Head, and staff who support the school council.
The year reps are chosen from class reps in each year group. They stay in post for a year.
Elections for the school council are held every autumn
Two representatives from the school council now sit on the borough wide school council, which meets 5 times a year to discuss whole school issues across South Tyneside.
Staff attend these meetings from South Tyneside Council to make sure that the views of young people in school are taken seriously and responded to by Council Staff, Officers and Members.
The borough wide school council also appoints two members to sit on the young people’s parliament, which meets every month to discuss issues that affect young people in the borough.
Recent successes from school councils include involvement in interviewing staff, changes in homework policy and improvements to toilet facilities. A number of school councils are also been given their own space to meet and work together.
The borough wide school council recently went on a residential to Kingswood Educational Centre in the Lake District where they took part in team building activities, and elected their Chair, Vice Chair, Secretaries and Young People’s Parliament reps.
