If you’ve read knowing the law you will know that Trading Standards are responsible for enforcing the laws that apply to shops selling cigarettes, alcohol and other age restricted goods to children and young people.

 

Throughout the year, on evenings and weekends, Trading Standards Officers with the help from people like you, attempt to make test purchases throughout South Tyneside.

 

All of the volunteers we use must look their age. So if you’re fifteen going on twenty-five Trading Standards wouldn’t be able to use you. So, if you are under sixteen, look of your age and want to help out we’d love to hear from you.

 

There are rigorous guidelines set out by the Home Office set that Trading Standards follow to make sure you’re kept safe and well (and to stop your parents worrying).

 

So if you feel like helping out and want to help make sure that shops in your region don’t break the law you can fill in a form on our website. Or get your parents to call 0191 424 7895 and leave your details so we can get back in touch.

 

You won’t get paid for helping out but Trading Standards will provide you with a certificate to keep with your Record or Achievement, and that looks really good when applying for colleges and jobs.

 

We’ve all seen groups of people hanging around the streets drinking alcohol. To younger children or to the elderly these groups of kids can be extremely threatening. Underage drinking has been closely linked with anti-social behaviour. One of the best ways to stop this menace is to help stop the sale of age restricted goods to children.

 

We need your help to combat underage sales. If you are worried that any of the stores in South Tyneside are selling alcohol, cigarettes or any age restricted products illegally, Trading Standards want to know.
