Feeling stressed is not always a bad thing. The excitement of a new challenge or a new relationship keeps life interesting. Tests have shown that students perform badly in exams if they are under too little stress as well as too much stress. The important fact is to get the level of stress right for you. Too little and you lack interest and energy in day to day life, too much and you suffer from all the classic symptoms of sleeplessness, illness, anxiety attacks, temper, depression and not being able to concentrate.
How do feel about yourself?
Whatever you feel about your body and how you look there will be a load of others who hate the same things about themselves. What’s important is that you talk to someone about how you feel and take action. One way of doing this is to build up your self-confidence. Find something you enjoy doing whatever that may be and do it.
Studying
Exams and studying also cause stress. Sometimes it’s the amount of homework you have to do and the deadlines set by teachers. If you feel that you are struggling to get your work done, speak to your teachers or go to your school council rep.
One school got its homework policy changed after the school council presented its case to the school management team!
Exams cause a lot of us to feel stressed. Try and prepare well beforehand, set up a timetable of revision. Learning how to breathe can help to steady nerves and calm you down.
Take a deep breath pushing out your stomach as you breath in and hold it for 5 seconds. Breathe out slowly to the count of 5. Repeat this about 6 times or until you start to feel calmer – it really does help!
