Q. Why do I need a CitizenCard?
A. Many organisations need to be sure of your age or identity. Using a CitizenCard is voluntary, but it can make life much easier. Even if you have a passport or driving licence, CitizenCard means you can leave these more valuable documents safely at home.
Q. Is CitizenCard widely-recognised ?
A. Many retailers, airlines (domestic flights) and other organisations recognise CitizenCard as valid photo-ID or proof-of-age. As a scheme audited by the Trading Standards Institute CitizenCard was the first scheme to carry PASS (Proof of Age Standards Scheme) accreditation, supported by the Home Office.
Q. Can anyone apply?
A. Babies, children, adults, seniors - anyone anywhere in the world can now obtain a CitizenCard. If you are under 16 you will need parental consent.
Q. How do I apply for a card?
A. Online at www.citizencard.com. You provide your personal details (first and family name, date of birth, address, full phone number, email) and details of your referee or - if you are at school or university - your teacher or tutor (name, address, phone number). You will also need to provide your - or if you are under 18 your parents' - credit or debit card details.
Q. Can I complete my application online?
A. You can apply for your card online, but it is important you provide us with all the information we ask you for: your credit or debit card details, your personal details and your referee's details. You also need to post us your photograph, signature and a copy of your birth certificate or Passport. Instructions on how to do this are sent by email as soon as you have applied.
Q. How does the online application process work?
A. As soon as you apply online you will be asked to enter your email address. We will then email you a password to enable you to continue applying. You need to enter your personal details, your referee's details and your payment details. Once the payment has been authorised, we will email you with confirmation that the application has been received and that we will verify the details. You will be emailed instructions on how to post to us your photo and signature. Please do NOT apply more than once as this will invalidate all your applications. Within five minutes of applying you should receive the email confirming that we have received your application.
Q. Who can act as my referee?
A. If you are in full-time education at school, college or university your form teacher or tutor must act as your referee. For all other applicants the permitted referees are: your doctor, your dentist, your bank manager, your solicitor, your accountant or any police officer or civil servant who can confirm your identity and age. A relative of an applicant cannot act as referee even if they fit one of the above categories.
Q. How long does it take to process my application for a card?
A. It takes up to 5 weeks but it may take longer if we have difficulty in verifying your identity and age. The process is quicker if you apply online rather than by post. If you need your card urgently we can process an application within 5-8 working days of receiving your application but a surcharge is payable.
Q. How much will it cost?
A. Online CitizenCard applications cost £9 in the UK (£5 for under-18s), €15 in the rest of the EC and US$15 in the rest of the world. The urgent application surcharge is £15 (UK) and €15/US$15 (rest of world). If your card is lost or stolen a replacement card will cost £10 or €15 or US$15. The same costs apply if you post us the form downloadable from this site instead of applying online.
Q. How do you verify my application?
A. We verify every application to check your age and identity. The precise details of how we do this are confidential. We use various tools such as electoral registers, address files, credit reference agency files and WorldPay. We also telephone your referee, whose identity we confirm.
Q. Are my personal details kept private once I give them to you?
A. All your personal details are kept on our secure database which is not connected to anything else. We do not pass on any of these details to any third party. We comply with the privacy and data protection laws of the United Kingdom Government, which are amongst the world's toughest. We keep your details on our database so that if someone queries your card we can confirm that you are a legitimate cardholder. If your card is lost or stolen, these details will also mean we can produce a replacement card quickly.
Q. How quickly can I receive my card?
A. Once we have processed your application your card is posted to you immediately (2nd class post in the UK, standard airmail to the rest of the world). Urgent applications are sent out by special delivery (guaranteed next day in the UK, 4-5 days in the rest of the world).
Q. Does my card ever expire?
A. No. Your card is valid for as long as you wish to use it. Many cardholders, in particular children and teenagers, wish to renew their card after about two years because the photo looks out-of-date or the signature has changed. A renewal card can be obtained for £10 (UK) €15/US$15 (rest of world). You need to post us your existing card with details of any changes (new photograph/signature or name). You should post this to:
