Have you ever been asked for ID when trying to buy certain goods when out shopping? Embarrassing, isn’t it? Do you know how to prove your age to shop assistants or ushers at the cinema?
There are strict laws prohibiting the sale of certain items eg alcohol, tobacco and fireworks to young people as they are considered to present real risks to their health or welfare.
The main reasons you need a proof of age card is:
- To prove you are young enough to still benefit from discounts available to young people eg public transport and leisure facilities
- To prove you are old enough to buy age restricted goods or services eg cigarettes or cinema entry
- Many airlines, banks, shops and other places need to be sure of your identity or age.
Using a CitizenCard is voluntary, but it can make life much easier. Even if you have a passport or photo-driving licence, using a CitizenCard means you can leave the more valuable documents safe at home.
For virtually all domestic flights you will not be allowed on board without a CitizenCard or passport or photo-driving licence.
Online CitizenCard applications cost £9 in the UK (£5 for under-18s), If you need a card quickly an urgent application surcharge is £15.
